Round 6 (winter): Sweet 2
[I didn't actually get all the way through this round. But since I'm not sure when I'll get my computer issues resolved and since I took a bunch of pictures anyway, I thought I'd go ahead and post it as is.]

Up to this point, Tabitha Sweet has been very much a supporting player in the story of Ste-Margo. She originally came to town to help her sister start up the bakery; but then Gemma got married faster than you could spit and had the twins nearly as quickly, and Tabby soon found herself playing babysitter while Gemma and Charlie ran the business without her. Over the years, she's had a few romantic encounters; she's seen her things burgled (repeatedly); and she's been able to earn a little income on the side as an arts & crafts blogger. Mostly, though, she's been in the background, helping out around the Sweet house and being an aunt to her nieces and nephew. Then when the twins became teenagers last fall, Tabby finally decided it was time to set out on her own.

With all of her experience babysitting her sister's children and a few of the other youngsters in town, Tabitha purchased a house that she could turn into a daycare center (pictures in this post). Let's take a look at the downstairs, where her living quarters are set up:

In her entryway is the third copy of the print that Amy Tang kept stealing. It's her favorite, so she'd buy it again if she had to. (Amy Tang: "It's my favorite, too!")

The living room with her new toy-making bench.

She can keep up her blog at her little workstation in the corner.

The master bedroom.

A tiny spare room for guests or in case she decides to get a roommate.

And a far, far bigger bathroom than I normally put in houses.

To go with her new home, Tabitha also gives herself a bit of a makeover and ends up with a kicky new 'do (and some new eyes!). It's quite a change, so it takes some getting used to...

But she warms up to it in (almost) no time.

As with Frida, the new haircut gives her a whole new lease on life, and Tabby feels ready to take on the world.

She spends most of the first day settling in and enjoying having a place all to herself. As a messy Pleasure sim, it's especially nice for her to be able to do whatever she wants, whenever she wants.

This has its downsides, too. Her attempts at finishing up some business-related documents the night before the daycare opens...

... don't last long.

But a call from her dad helps get her back on track, or at least away from the games for the night.

Her family (minus Charlie and Marzipan) stop by to wish her well. Even if they no longer live in the same house, they'll always stay close.

(Some sims are easier to please than others.)

The next morning, Tabitha welcomes her first clients. Though she's not 100% settled on a schedule yet, her rough plan is to take babies and toddlers on weekdays from 8-6 and children after school from 3-6. She'll charge §100 per child per week, payable on Fridays. Attending the first session are:

Orla and Ernie McKim

Marzipan Sweet

And Bruno and Basil Mead. She's holding off on adding her afterschool program until she gets the hang of things with the little ones, which isn't a bad idea.

It's a long day looking after so many kiddies all by herself. She may need to hire some help if she wants keep it up.

Tabby's LTW is to become a media magnate, and there is a slot available in the journalism career; but for now she contents herself with evenings spent working on her blog.

And when her wrists start to cramp, she works out some larger muscle groups on the toy bench. It's a perfect system.

Beatrice joins her for breakfast early the next morning.

Tabitha: "So, as I was saying—oh. Oh. Consider ourselves something of a messy eater there, do we?"

T: "As you know, I've long held a reputation as the messiest eater in our family. It's kind of a point of pride, though I don't mean to brag."

T: "Ahem."

T: "Oh, I see. Is that how it's going to go down? Well."

T: "So, I trust we have an understanding here, yes? Good."

Tabby is taking it slow with getting her daycare business off the ground, and since the weather looks fine, she heads out to spend the day walking around. Her first stop is the Una Castaway Memorial Cemetery, which the town has just recently opened to the public.

There's a small stone building in the corner of this old churchyard, though the church itself is long gone, and a few remaining headstones belonging to the village's earliest residents.

Inside, it looks to have been a small mausoleum, or a tiny chapel. Either way, it's empty now.

Tabitha tries out the fishing before stopping for a chat with Ramona, who's also out for some fresh air.

She's just starting to think what a nice place it is to spend an afternoon when the snow starts to fall and she notices Marco over in the corner.

Tabitha didn't really know Una, and she does her best to try to cheer Marco up.

But he's understandably torn up and not overly excited to accept comfort from this woman he barely knows.

So instead, she takes a moment to stand there with him without saying anything. The cemetery is still a nice place, and the snow is rather peaceful.

After a while, Tabby heads down the block to Main Street Yoga so she can come in out of the cold.

She browses the tea selection, does a little yoga, and gets a massage before turning back home for the day.

Her dad, Maximillian, is there and soon joined by her nephew, Arlo. They stay for supper while the snow continues to fall.

The next morning, there's pajama blogging and breakfast and a whole new day ahead. Tabby's finally on her own, and things are looking pretty good.

Notes:
- With this update and the kind of crossover that the daycare involves, I've finally settled on my philosophy of how time works in a BACC like this. I've decided that Day 1 of winter for one round is not the exact same day as Day 1 of winter in every other family's round, but rather that each round is representative of five average/random days from each household's season. So where I used to say that Beatrice wouldn't be able to show up on Day 1 of Tabby's round as a teen because she didn't age up until later in her round, now I feel like it's kosher; this is just another part of winter. Long story short, Day 1 =/= Day 1 literally for each household. Does that make sense? How do think of this in your game? I always think it's interesting to hear how other people handle these sorts of things when they play.

- For the daycare, I'm using Inge's Meeting Controller to summon the kids each session and Monique's Payee Notebook to set up billing for each family. I had to cheat and set Tabitha as the aunt of every toddler and baby to allow her to be able to interact with them, and for some reason, she still can't use the cribs or the changing tables at all. But otherwise, this seems to work for a daycare setup.

This has its downsides, too. Her attempts at finishing up some business-related documents the night before the daycare opens...don't last long. THIS IS ME. I kick my family out of the house so I can get homework/assignments done, annddddd then I go play sims. Oopse.

(you might want to stick her in journalism before she becomes an elder, as I've had sims that enter careers as elders unable to make it all the way to the top. They get 'stuck' like teens do. Entering the job before hitting elder seems to negate that)

Yeah, she was briefly in journalism before she moved to this house, but I'm not sure how much I care to fulfill that LTW. We'll see how the daycare thing goes, I guess!

Man, I want that kind of life. 'Will I play with children today? No, I'll go get a MASSAGE.'

The daycare seems like loads of fun. I hope your computer issues are resolved soon, it sucks to have it go on and on like this. :C <3

Thanks. It's looking like a hardware issue, but at least I'm learning more about computers? >:(

The messy eating competition was funny. Tabby's new makeover looks really nice. :)

Its too bad you're still having issues, I'm going to miss your updates! Hopefully they will be resolved soon.

Messy eating competition!

Yes, that method of timekeeping makes sense. You know each sim day is a composite of lots of sim days, anyway, since it's possible to do so much in it.

It's kind of automatic in my game since I do one day rotations (but then people are in all the seasons at once; I figure that's because my game takes place at a high altitude in the Simerican equivalent of the Upper South, where the weather is seriously wonky anyway).

I may be picking your brains for CC in the near future, since most of mine was lost in a hard drive crash. Tech's great when it works. The rest of the time, it sucks.

Hard drive crash? Eep. I'm currently picking the brains of the tech folk at MTS and am wavering between buying a $50 video card for my 5-year-old PC or just going for it and buying/building (!!) a new machine. Does this mean you've had to reinstall everything? Honestly, the idea of reinstalling TS2 is one of the things that makes me loath to think about getting a new computer, though it shouldn't be a big deal, right?

There's something that sounds nice and balanced about 1-day rotations. I wonder why more BACC-types don't do it? Loading times?

Are you using Windows 7? I've had XP Pro for so long, this is another thing I'm apprehensive about, especially for Sims stuff.

[identity profile] susannag.livejournal.com on March 25th, 2012 08:35 pm (UTC)
No, Windows XP. I doubt 7 would run on this machine, as it is pretty old. Seven or eight, I think.

I think most people just don't feel like they can accomplish much in one day. I find that if I play two or three days I burn out on the family; but playing one day (especially now that I have almost 50 active households, five of them University and therefore played in a set of three subrotations to keep them in line with the main hood) I am motivated to play the stuffings out of them while I've got them and am constantly looking forward to what's going to happen to them next.

As for the hard drive crash, it's pretty bad; not as bad as it might be, but worse than it had to be because our new backup software let us down. We're currently limping along with a drive a quarter of the size of the one we used to have, but my husband's ordered a terrabyte drive that's supposed to be here soon. He'll partition it the way he wants it and I'll install practically everything, since I work from home and it's just a matter of sitting here reading and waiting for the next "install disk" prompt. Then I can restore the files we've got, dating from mid-February. Which is a lot of gameplay to lose, but I go in for triple redundancy on my actual writing files. I've lost some submission history and a month of high-quality gaming. We've also lost some important e-mails, and my husband will have to recreate some stuff. If this is the worst thing to happen to us all year, we'll be in good shape.

I am presently in a CC downloading fugue. I was just going to replace the stuff I was actually using and not get new things. You can imagine how long that lasted! Especially since a lot of sites are closing and in the search for Thing A I run across Things B, C, and D. I'm considering identifying the "most essential" things and backing them up redundantly with my writing files; but that seems kind of excessive.

Oh good! Hope I'm able to get my game up and running soon to keep it going! It's not a perfect system (example: Ernie was about to have a toddler birthday, which I didn't want to happen away from home, so I had to zap him with a teleporter to keep Tabby from growing him up), and it's really hectic with only one adult; but I think it will be fun! Can't wait to try out the playground in the spring.

The town is getting so big! It's so nice to see some of the comm lots.

P.S. May I ask where you found the paintings in this picture? http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp198/mswn/ts2/6%20Tabby/ScreenShot117.jpg

The paintings are a recent acquisition! Just released by ZeroDark here (http://zerographic.dreamwidth.org/38690.html). So nice.

I agree, it's always nice to see BACC sims out and about in their towns! I think people forget to take advantage of the towns they've been building sometimes (I definitely do). Anyway, it's easy to work in for a single-sim household!

I love her new hair, too! It suits her so much more!

I love how you did the daycare thing! I'm working as a children educator myself and... lol it reminds me of my work xD Well I'm on my internship, just before I get my title finally :3

I just wanted to ask for some stuff. Like the mattresses in which the toddlers sleep, and the other baby stuff like this (http://i411.photobucket.com/albums/pp198/mswn/ts2/6%20Tabby/ScreenShot094.jpg)? I once asked another simmer but she refused to tell me... So thank you in advance! And sorry for the WCIF, but I'm planning on installing sims 2 back (got a bit tired of sims 3) and would need new stuff :3

Hi, glad you liked it! The dangle-master and baby swing are by Anna, here (http://an-nas.livejournal.com/4163.html).
Not sure about the toddler mats... I think the mesh might be the 1-tile pet bed from simwardrobe.com, but it must be a version that allows you to pick up recolors from the Maxis crib-- maybe check MTS? And I'm pretty sure the recolors came from GoS-- check this page (http://www.digitalperversion.net/gardenofshadows/index.php?board=57.0) for projects about kids/maternity, etc. The files start out "CO_maxiscrib-ataverablanket." Hope that helps!

I'm finally all caught up! :)

Tabitha looks lovely with her new makeover. The daycare looks awesome, too.

Time in TS2 can be so wonky that I try not to think about it too much. I use the aspiration reward object if necessary to keep all the households on the same season and then take a similar "winter is winter" approach. If I tried to control it more than that, I might go crazy - best not to give my OCD an excuse to run wild! ;)
